In 1960, at a young age of 17, our founder Mr Tan Tiong Hoe started working as an apprentice in a Dutch company, Mirandolle Voute & Co., (S) Pte Ltd, where he acquired the art and knowledge of Coffee Roasting and the Blending of Specialty Coffee.
In 1963, at the age of 20, he started his own coffee business under the unregistered name of Tiong Hoe & Company, where coffee distributions were targeted to households and small Food and Beverage outlets.
In the 1970s, due to the massive increase in raw coffee prices, the trend of mixing coffee with maize, magarine and sugar became a common popular industrial practice among local coffee roasters in Singapore, even up till this date. In the move then to target premier coffee drinkers, using the same method adopted by local coffee roasters will not succeed. Mr. Tan insisted in roasting 100% pure coffee to maintain his standard of Quality Coffee, he commenced roasting 100% pure coffee, applying the knowledge he acquired from his former employer, MIRANDOLLE VOUTE & CO., (S) PTE LTD and started a new career.
In 1975, Tiong Hoe Gim Kee Trading Co., (THGK) was registered. The company grows with the penetration into Hotel Industry, Clubs, Cafés, Restaurants, Caterers, Airline, Shipyards, Ship’s Chandler, Supermarkets, Wholesalers, Hospital, Government Sectors, Offices, etc.
In 1985, Fresh Café Distributors was set up as a subsidiary of THGK in the move to create a new image. The extension of Fully-Automatic Machine was hence commenced.
In 2010, FRESH CAFÉ is a registered member to the UTZ CERTIFIED Good Inside Program. UTZ mean “good” in Mayan language. UTZ CERTIFIED is a worldwide certification program that sets the standard for responsible coffee production and sourcing. We want our customers to know that coffees they drink has been produced with good agricultural and business practices, also taking into consideration social and environmental criteria.
Today, Fresh Café is run with tradition and heritage since it was first started, still a family business managed by the second generation of the Tan family. Despite the many transformations to the company, Fresh Café's commitment and dedication in providing Quality Coffee has never changed.
